And focusing on Marvel and DC at the expense of the dozens of other publishers in comics, and then declaring comics a failure at San Diego Comic-Con, is incredibly myopic. It’s a mistake to think that Marvel and DC are all that mattered, that their new events or announcements dictate the future of capital-c Comics. Marvel and DC are comics, just like the other publishers, and they make some great ones when they let the creators do their own thing. But at this point? You can’t treat them like the entirety of the comics industry, or even two companies that can dictate the future of comics. They run the movies, and that’s cool, but running comics? It’s just not true any more. Image in particular outsells Marvel in the book market as far as trade paperbacks go, and that holds true in the comics market lately, too. That’s no coincidence. People enjoy Marvel and DC, but they want more than Marvel and DC.

If the announcements from the Big Two felt lackluster, but the fans still had a great time, how did comics fail? That sounds like a Marvel & DC problem. Vertical debuted Moyoco Anno’s brand new book In Clothes Called Fat at the show, a comic geared toward adult women. They sold out of Fumi Yoshinaga’s What Did You Eat Yesterday?, a romance/cooking comic. At Image, we sold out of Greg Tocchini & Rick Remender’s Low, an aquatic sci-fi tale, and Nick Dragotta & team’s Howtoons, a comic geared toward getting kids interested in the science through practical play. Boom! burned through Lumberjanes, a comic about girls at camp. These aren’t your normal comics, and people were eating them up.

"

After two bad “Comic-Con was bad for comics!”/”Comic-Con was good for comics!” pieces, io9 lets iamdavidbrothers do his thing, and the result is—surprise surprise—a great piece that’s head and shoulders above the traditional (print) comic coverage on the site*.

-great piece as usual by my brother David. And yeah, Vertical with a Big V killed it at SDCC. People ate up josei comics and gay comics up! They were all over our mecha manga. And as usual cat comics dominated like few pet genres can. We didn’t have a huge booth with huge lines. But we had a steady stream of hungry and knowledgeable readers, including many new ones introduced to us thru social and visual media.

I wanna thank all our readers for their support. And then give a special nod to our publisher friends - Image, Fantagraphics, First Second, Drawn & Quarterly, Top Shelf, Viz, Seven Seas, Funimation, Dark Horse and Oni Press - for their support. They were all winners at SDCC! (via vertical-inc)

I downloaded a bunch of fansubbed Sukeban Deka recently. I would pay for this show.

Sex by The 1975 [EP Version]

Been really busy with personal stuff and work since I got back to Japan. So busy that this is in the queue as I will be out of town the next few days. I’m trying to provide some consistent content to make up for my lack of updates if any kind from when I was in Estonia.

I have yet to take pictures of the apartment as me and my roommate are slowly but surely furnishing it currently. So enjoy the pics of a part of my shelf and breakfast from our first morning in the new place.

I have plenty of things to photograph, edit, and even waiting to be built. I just got some paints to touch up the 1/12 Armory Weapons I got last week. This is going to be my first time building a kit and painting in over 6 years…so I’ve been too scared to start it. I’ve been asking my dad for tips and tricks again so I can continue pussy-footing around it for a little while longer.

Anyways, hopefully I can get things straightened out soon so I have more free time and maybe then me and my roommate will have internet in the place as well so we don’t have to sit outside Funeral Home to leech free Wifi at 3 in the morning -.-

Also a quick thank you to everyone as I am now well over 1,000 followers! Thank you so much! Usually when someone follows I go checkout their page so I can follow back, especially if you post on toys and video game collecting. The last time I was able to look at new follower’s pages was well over 300 followers ago..so please if you do happen to see this and post on the things above then please message me, have a conversation, stay awhile - Thanks!

Also x2 - I have now officially started selling games. 11 stores, 2 cities, and 2 weeks later I have cleaned and play tested a complete ps1 Tekken collection. It took me awhile to find the games in decent condition complete with the spine cards. Please look hereif you’re interested!

sit outside Funeral Home to leech free Wifi at 3 in the morning, oh wow. haha.

I’ve been quite busy the last few months as well.

I’ve got the same fear of painting a kit too. I used to paint them a lot when I was a kid (they were awful) and I’d love to do it again and be good at it.

This looks pretty incredible.
