Thoughts on the first two episodes of Agents of Shield:

First, the Actors are all overly pretty or handsome. The acting feels very wooden and the quips are not funny. The show seems to rely on tropes of older stuff done by Whedon, especially character tropes and dialogue, featuring lines as “Can you say that in English please??” after the questioned character spews basic physical science terminology(this happens at least three times in the second episode). Characters talking fast and interrupting each other is also present in this show, I believe its an attempt to sound smart but its just people being assholes to each other. Hand in hand, the most outstanding thing that bugs me is how snarky and unbelievably witty the dialogue is.

The references used in this show don’t feel like they have any weight, both lines referring to things in pop culture and to the movies the series owes its existence to. A few examples include “Is that the Hunger Games??” and using lines from 3 year old songs from a little classic called Sexy and I know it from LMFAO: “You look good”; “Yeah, I work out”; *snarky face response*. The show also shallowly jokes at the fact the internet is a thing and that this girl hacked Shield with her laptop and read people’s Tweets. The most irking of them all is when someone like Coulson refers to an event and says something like “This reminds me of that thing that happened in one of those previous six movies”(*wink at the audience*). This kind of off-hand pandering doesn’t do anything for me.

Overall, I didn’t see any reason to care about the cast of characters. They feel very cookie-cutter, generic, made-for-tv characters. The main cast revolves around a small group of nobody underdogs who just might be able to save the day. Oh, and “that new girl is a risk!!” and she’ll surely be the sole savior to the team after that one character you love dies and all hope seems lost.

This series relies too much on Agent Coulson. Agent Coulson is like one of those cool background characters like Boba Fett but when you start to put a focus on them, their mystery and anything that that was cool about them fades away. Here, Coulson is different, a snarky asshole and boss to the main cast,  and it hasn’t been explained how he survived dying in that Avengers movie though I’m sure that will be wrapped up by the end of the season’s story arc.

The cameos are a cheap ploy to get people to tune in.

The sets and special effects on this show are not given any favors from the HD cameras. It either all looks weirdly cheap, mediocre, or just terrible.

The soundtrack is probably the most annoying part of this show. It sounds incredibly generic, like they picked out sounds from a free soundtrack database provided from their studio. When its used, its either overly heroic or incredibly cheesy.

Is Agents of Shield trying too hard or not trying hard enough?

The main problem I have with Agents of Shield, is that I’ve seen GREAT TV shows but I’ve also seen mediocrity wrapped around a brand name, genres, and gimmicks. My question, to those who do like Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., is what if it wasn’t called “Marvel’s Agents of Shield”? Do you really think you would tune in every week? I wouldn’t.

Thoughts on The Wolverine:

I saw The Wolverine last night with my bud Kev

Gotta say, I was impressed. It’s great fun and literally kept me at the edge of my seat at some parts. I kind of felt like a kid in the theatre. The Wolverine was a pleasant surprise and I definitely recommend people go see it.

With Pacific Rim at the top, I think The Wolverine is probably the second funnest, most exciting movie of the summer.
